FEMA National Flood Insurance Program

The National Flood Insurance Program aims to reduce the impact of flooding on private and public structures. It does so by providing affordable insurance to property owners, renters and businesses and by encouraging communities to adopt and enforce floodplain management regulations. These efforts help mitigate the effects of flooding on new and improved structures. Overall, the program reduces the socio-economic impact of disasters by promoting the purchase and retention of general risk insurance, but also of flood insurance, specifically.  For more information visit Floodsmart.

Community Rating System

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP ) Community Rating System (CRS) was implemented in1990 as a voluntary program for recognizing and encouraging community floodplain management activities exceeding the minimum NFIP standards.  Any community in full compliance with the minimum NFIP floodplain management requirements may apply to join the CRS.

As a result, flood insurance premium rates are discounted to reflect the reduced flood risk resulting from the community actions meeting the three goals of the CRS:

  1. Reduce flood damage to insurable property;
  2. Strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the NFIP, and
  3. Encourage a comprehensive approach to floodplain management.
